Solar systems should have a symbiotic relationship with nature, using the sun itself to produce zero-emission energy. But sometimes animals can get too comfortable under panels, inside equipment or near photovoltaic panels, causing problems that can lead to costly repairs. Small animals such as rats or squirrels can chew through electrical wires, causing system failure and possibly even causing an electrical fire. Removing nesting squirrels from under your roof is not as easy as it seems.
Preventive solutions can be installed to keep animals away from rooftop solar panels while maintaining proper air flow.
Conversely, some developers of ground-mounted solar panels want to allow some animals to be free to roam solar installations in remote areas to reduce the environmental impact of these sites. Animal-friendly fences make these transitions possible.
Recessed solar panels on pitched roofs leave only a few inches of space between the panels and the roof covering. Often there is not even enough space for the installer to reach it, but small animals can nestle comfortably and find a safe haven there. Nesting animals can place additional stress on system cables.
Closing the gap completely will cut off the necessary air flow under the panel to maintain the proper temperature in the system, but there are products that may keep animals out while still allowing the required amount of air through.
This product looks pretty good and should work well for a lot of chewy critters running around at night. Another thing I have witnessed is a wasp’s nest taking up residence under the solar PV panels on the inside edges of the solar PV panel frame near the mounting tabs. Climbing onto your roof to spray water and clean the panels can turn into an adventure when someone discovers a wasp’s nest under your structure.
